Domain Registration refers to the process by which a new domain name is created. The registrant - the owner - of the domain name uses one of numerous registrars to create the domain name registration. Typically first a search is done for availability of the domain name. Then once an available domain is found, the registrant approves the domain registration by the registrar. The registrar then reserves the name and completes the registration process.

The top two domain registration providers are 1and1 and Go Daddy, and here we provide brief reviews. We use both, but prefer 1and1 due to low prices. Both have reputations for reliability and ease of use.

1and1 Domain Registration Review: 1and1 is also called 1&1 or 1und1 in Germany. 1&1 at 1and1.com is the largest domain registrar in Europe and they are growing in the U.S. and Asia markets. We have found 1and1.com to provide domain name registration at relatively low prices, and for most services lower than GoDaddy. This makes 1and1 an attractive choice for domain registration. Their interface also is relatively easy to use, but they typically are a little slower than Go Daddy. So, if waiting an extra hour or two or three for a new domain name to become active in your account after completing the registration process is acceptable to you, 1&1 is a good alternative.

Go Daddy Domain Registration Review: The largest domain registrar is Go Daddy at GoDaddy.com - and not coincidentally Go Daddy Hosting is the largest web hosting service provider. For domain registration, we have found Go Daddy to be very fast, and to have a powerful interface. Their prices are low to mid level compared to other domain registration companies.

Check Domain Name Availability - 1&1 :
Other web hosting companies also offer domain registration. Some offer a free domain name registration for new accounts, and you can find out if a hosting company provides that service by reviewing the offerings on the Top Web Hosting list.

These days, it is becomming typical that the first name checked already is taken, particularly if a popular TLD or cTLD is desired. The TLD (Top Level Domain) is the suffix on the domain name, like .com, .net, .info, .org or .edu. A cTLD refers to a country Top Level Domain. Each country and many regions have such cTLD domains. Examples are:
The Top 5 Web Hosts:

     HostGator
     BlueHost
     Go Daddy Hosting
     StartLogic
     HostMonster

  • .de for Germany
  • .uk for the United Kingdom
  • .ca for Canada
  • .au for Australia
  • .fr for France
  • .it for Italy
  • .es for Spain
  • .se for Sweden
  • .nl for Netherlands
  • .jp for Japan
  • .kr for Korea
  • .ru for Russia
  • .us for the United States
  • .eu for the European Union
  • .asia for the Asia region
By far, .com is the most popular TLD and therefore is the most difficult in which to find a free new domain name. However, .com domains have become standard, especially in the United States, so frequently it viewed as more favorable to find an open .com rather than settle for another suffix that might be available.
